Finches in the Reading Junior Cup
Due to postponements and availability of pitches Cookham Dean Reserves have forfeited home advantage to get their second round match in the Reading Junior Cup played.
However it is not as inconvenient for the team as you might think. Finches have always provided good surfaces to play on at their ground and after the game their hospitality is virtually second to none in local football. Their bar provides food and a warm atmosphere to enjoy whatever the outcome of match.
Over the years Cookham Dean have had some great matches there and Finches away was always eagerly anticipated in the old days of the Reading & District League before the club slipped off into the Hellenic League.
We can remember one match in particular during the 1990's when the first team played Finches away in the Senior Cup and won 6-3 in an absolute classic. Later on that same afternoon Cookham Dean Reserves even called into the bar at Finchampstead on their way back from a big victory at Theale to join the Senior side in supporting an Auction that Finches were holding that evening to raise funds such was the camaraderie in those days. At the event former Dean striker Terry Claydon won one bid for a dress during that auction and proudly wore the outfit for the rest of the night. There was also an incident where a hotdog was replaced in it's bun by something else...............but we won't go into that, because we are a family club, all we can say however is that it was a very good night that moved into the realm's of football club folklore.
Saturday's fixture really does conjure up some fine memories of some really good games and occasions involving the two clubs.
Let's hope this week's Cup tie is also a good football match
