Cookham Dean Reserves enjoyed their best ever finish in the Reading League by ending 2007/08 as Premier Division Champions.
The Reserves went into the final game against second placed Marlow United Reserves knowing that a point would be enough to wrap up the title for the first time.
But Marlow, who were unbeaten in their previous 12 league games, were confident of scoring the win they needed to complete the double, just a week after lifting the Reading Evening Post Junior Cup.
It was Cookham, however, who came out on top, to the delight – and relief – of Manager Dave Clarke. He said “we had been top for so long that it got a bit hairy towards the end as Marlow had kept on winning”. “Fair play to Marlow they put up a good fight but I think we were just too good in the end, and I am proud of all the boys.
“We ended winning the league by five points, which I think is a fair reflection.”
“We only picked up six points from out first five games, but the turning point was when we went on a ten match winning run.” Clarke added “that is the highest the Cookham Reserve side ever finished in this league and I am so pleased that the lads have something to show for all the effort they have put in this season.”
" I must also thank Clanger in the first team for helping the Reserves a lot in our quest for the title. The first team often went with fewer players in their squad than we had to give us more strength, and we were very greatful for that, it showed that the club was pulling together".
“When I took over three years ago we wanted to keep progressing season by season and I think we have done that”.
Long term leaders Cookham had watched as local rivals Marlow came from the edge of the relegation zone to just two points off the top after a tremendous run of form and with the title at stake both sides deserve credit for a very exciting title race.
Cookham also reached the final of the Norfolkian Junior Cup in 2007/08 which was as ever an excellent occasion with the Under 11s joining in the pre match fun, but unfortunately the match never lived up to expectations and it turned out to be one of the poorer performances of an otherwise excellent season for the Dean, but one poor show should not deflect from a successful year.
Holyport fielded a young & mobile side who passed the ball well in the Final, but they were however unrecognisable from the side that beat Cookhams Veterans in the Quarter Final of the same competition.
At the end of the campaign Dave Clarke happily accepted the invitation from the committee to take over as first team Manager after Terry Claydon had decided to stand down from the role. Clarke then announced that his assistant Dave Johnson and his Captain Mark Hayes from the title winning campaign would form the new partnership leading the Reserves in 2008/09.
