Joke of the Week 102
Date: 08/05/08
Four friends, who hadn't seen each other in 30 years,
reunited at a party
After several drinks, one of the men had to use the rest room.
Those who remained talked about their kids.
The first guy said, 'My son is my pride and joy. He started working
at a successful company at the bottom of the barrel.
He studied Economics and Business Administration
and soon began to climb the corporate ladder
and now he's the president of the company.
He became so rich that he gave
his best friend a top of the line Mercedes for his birthday.'
The second guy said, 'Darn, that's terrific! My son is also my pride
and joy. He started working for a big airline, then went to flight school
to become a pilot.
Eventually he became a partner in the company, where
he owns the majority of its assets He's so rich that he gave his best
friend a brand new jet for his birthday.'
The third man said: 'Well, that's terrific! My son studied in the
best universities and became an engineer. Then he started his own
construction company and is now a multimillionaire.
He also gave away something very nice and expensive to his best friend for his birthday: A 30,000 square foot mansion.'
The three friends congratulated each other just as the fourth
returned from the restroom and asked: 'What are all the congratulations for?'

One of the three said: 'We were talking about the pride we feel for
the successes of our sons. .What about your son?'
The fourth man replied: 'My son is gay and makes a living dancing as
a stripper at a nightclub.'
The three friends said: 'What a shame... what a disappointment.'
The fourth man replied: 'No, I'm not ashamed.
He's my son and I love him.

And he hasn't done too bad either. His birthday was two weeks ago, and he received a beautiful 30,000 square foot mansion, a brand new jet and a top of the line Mercedes from his three boyfriends.'

Anniversary
Date: 21/02/08
The site will be two years old this week and the counter states that we have had 90,000 strikes in that time.
In fact the counter did not appear as a feature until May 2006 so we will probably celebrate our 100,000th visitor in the spring.

That gives us (more or less) an average of 1,000 hits per week in our short time on line

so........................Thanks for coming.

Summer Coaching Coarse
Date: 29/01/08
There will be places available on an FA coaching Course this summer which will cover first aid, child protection, and basic coaching.
The idea is to organise the course in the close season and avoid the busy holiday period.

Anybody interested to learn more will be able to read more on these pages soon or you can contact committee member Mark Walters

The Under 11 Match Reports
Date: 28/01/08

Subject: Reporter

Who is doing your web page match reports Mark?

They should be advertised to a wider audience, I just had a peek and well........................................talk about waxing lyrical

Hi Sid, he's brilliant, better match reports than the one's you get in the "Sunday" papers.

It's Ollie's Dad, John Madelin and he just loves everything about the whole footy experience. He, by his own admission is fairly new to football. He didn't play, was into rugby etc, so he brings a new and original approach to the "match report". All good fun.

Cheers for the mention on the webpage, the boys are slowly getting better and better and even better, they're the clubs "NATURAL BORN WINNERS" Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark.

Dealing with Injuries
Date: 28/01/08
We all know that one of the downsides to playing Football is picking up injuries. You cannot do yourself justice on the pitch if you have a bad knock or even worse you miss playing the game altogether if you have a bad one.
We have added some useful notes on the subject on one of the sites new
sections "Club Documents". The reason for doing it is I know how stubburn some players can be about seeking treatment, and it is to the benefit of the club that we help our players get over physical problems as soon as we can.

You may also like to fill in a player profile form on the Docs page and send it to the site and help improve the content.

The electronics company director set up a youth project in 1998, has co-ordinated a community radio station and runs the town's website.
Ms Kwantes said she was amazed to get the honour and initially thought the letter marked "Her Majesty's Service" was from the tax office.
Liz said "Cookham is a very good place to live because there is a lot going on."There are a lot of people who take an active part in lots of events."
The Honours for services to the community of Cookham included fundraising for Amnesty International since university days, being a trustee and national treasurer for the charity Arthritis Care, setting up Cookham Twinning in 1993 with Cookham's twin village St Benoit, organising the Millennium and Jubilee celebrations with Brian Clews and Cookham Summer FM 2006 with Timmy Mallett, being a Parish Councillor and a Cookham Rise School governor, chairman of the Pinder Hall management committee, a trustee of the Kings Hall Trust that own the Spencer Gallery and setting up the Cookham Youth Project in 1998. Can you help us to enjoy a better future
Date: 19/01/08

The club has a long and proud tradition of sportsmanship and success on the playing field and the club has always relied on a small and dedicated group of people to maintain it’s place at the heart of the local Football community.
The Football Club’s committee work hard along with the coaching staff to provide a good standard of Football for both men and boys at all levels of the game.
The running & organisation of the club however does come with a fairly high price tag. It is a constant struggle to raise funds to keep our heads above water and simply to maintain what we have.
The club recognises the enormous amount of voluntary work put into the club by individual members, but at times it is not unreasonable for these few people to request a little help therefore we are canvassing everyone within in the club to see if they would be interested in helping out.
The Saturday Reserve team need help and are looking for a linesman to attend their matches and become part of their support staff.
Fundraising is a continued effort and another area supporters could help the club could be by considering sponsoring a team, or perhaps a player, it could be your son or a boyfriend, husband or brother who play’s for Cookham Dean.
Maybe you could even sponsor a match, or a piece of equipment such as a Matchball as a one off gesture. There are many ways in which you could help Cookham Dean Football Club. The Football Club always recognises the value of the sponsorships we receive.
Our ever popular website has a dedicated area to acknowledge our generous supporters.
We believe we have something worth holding on to at the Dean, we also believe that with a little help we can move the club forward, by not only improving the facilities and standards for everyone, but guaranteeing the club’s future by building on what we have already achieved.
To ensure such a future for the club, and to progress we must find supporters who not only want to share in a our success but who want to be part of something extremely worthwhile.
We are looking for like minded individuals to come forward and join the committee and bring with them fresh ideas, and we are looking for help in all areas of the club to improve facilities and conditions.
We all know the old saying that charity begins at home, and we hope that this appeal will not only be a useful exercise for the good of the club but that it could also herald the start of yet another golden era in the Cookham Dean Football Club’s proud history.
If you are interested in taking a more active roll and becoming more involved with the Football Club we feel sure you will find it can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Photograph Appeal (updated)
Date: 21/11/06
As you maybe aware, we have advertised in the local press and on cookham.com for old team photos
which we can display on the clubhouse walls along with our own collection which will soon be re-framed.

We would like to thank
Albert Stroud who played before & after World War II for his historical contribution that not only included a 1946-47 team pic but also his scrapebook and league winners medals.
Brian Maidment a fine local player loaned a picture with his father in it from 1934/35
Also Daphne Bateman, wife of Arthur Bateman who played in the 40s and 50s came up with a classic team photo taken at York Road in the fifties while Peter Finlan the goalkeeper who was involved in the 50s and 60s had several good shots saved for us.
Mike Pocock who played in the sixties & Seventies, also came forward with a good collection of memories to share with us.
Finally Pauline Blore of Warren Row
donated a 1919-1920 photograph which featured her father amongst other well known Cookham lads such as William & George Copas, and Tom Garrett the good Colonels brother.

We have had several other replys, by email and these are some.....

Hi there, im Gerry Donaldson an ex player of Cookham Dean Fc from 1969-1972? . Just came across the website which has brought back fond memories of my playing days. Colin Budge was one of the best players I can remember and lost two pound in weight on average every game! Brinner Lambert once gave me a right rollicking after winning a league game in Reading (We never lost many then) for having a bad hangover even though I scored two goals!
I have enclosed a photograph circa 1970 of the side. If anyone from the team remembers me and wants to get in touch I would be very pleased.
Your Sincerely
Gerry

Name: Ted Lewendon
Address: Perth, Australia
Comments: I have a photograph of the senior team who won the High Wycombe League(2) 1954-55 of which I was a member. I was also a member of the reserve side which won the Norfolkian Cup(reserves) I think it was,it's a long time ago now! Memories can get slightly mixed!!! With regards
Ted Lewendon

Hi Rory ........ your snippet in the local paper refers. I played for the Dean from leaving school until the mid sixties. Many winners medals from various leagues in which we played. Probably the best day was winning the Norfokian Cup. I have three group pics from 1952 to 1960/1 under the captains Tony Hawkins (sadly gone) and Denis Hill. It was the era of George Ancell, the Garetts and the Falkers, all local Dean lads. You are welcome to them if any help. Perhaps I might get an invitation to the clubhouse some time, would be great to see old photos.

David Nelms

Hi Rory ..... Many thanks for your email reply. Yes I do remember Colin Moore, I recall he had some brothers. He was of course one of the younger lads. Likewise I do know of Colin Budge, but only after I had retired. The George Ancell of which you spoke collecting insurance is one and the same. George Wayne rings a bell but unless I saw a photo I can't quite place him. Is the old photo that you are after the one from Ann Danks book on Cookham? If it is, then a very young George Ancell is in the foreground and Colonel Garrett is to the right, but perhaps you refer to another shot. I still have the Maidenhead Advertiser regularly so I keep in touch with the latest achievements - of course in my day we only had the first team and the reserves - and Sunday was just a no go. I am still in touch with a lot from those days - I guess we could raise a respectable team .. ha, ha. Will take you up on your offer and bring what I have along. Will contact you in advance .. many thanks for your offer.

All the best - David

Hello Gavin, (Amended)
Congratulations on your web-site; but more importantly, I commend you for your fortitude in establishing and maintaining the interest and sense of history associated with the Cookham Dean F.C. You are one, of a small band of people prepared to give of there often precious time, to the benefit of the greater mass. That too is an historic fact ! and without a supportive wife, sometimes impossible.

I started playing for the C.D.F.C. when I was 18yrs. I was at the time, an apprentice watchmaker to Rubin Turk in Maidenhead, whom had a shop at the Kidwells Park end of Market St. which I believe is now a round-about. I could have started playing sooner than I did, except for the fact I had to work on Saturday afternoons. However, I became more and more frustrated at being unable to play, so being a tenacious and at times I suppose, "a stroppy little bugger" I suggested to my boss, that it would be a good idea if I were to work on a Thursday afternoon(early closing) and have Saturday afternoon off, which meant of course that he had to work as well ! which he did, he was a good old chap and a great watchmaker. I started on 10 shillings(10 bob, 1/2 pound sterling) week! so when you look at the photograph, you will a see a poor apprentice whom could do with a new pair of socks; by then, I was probably on 2 pound per week.
I started off in the reserve side for a game or two and then played for the 1st. team, which was the season that this photo. represents. I really cannot recall the sequence of events in my playing career, except that at 21yrs. I was conscripted into the R.E.M.E. for 2yrs. National Service and for whom I played at intercampus level. Because of the non combatant nature of the R.E.M.E. we often used to run up against professional players, being given a soft National Service assignment ! they of course were always a great challenge. I was able eventually to get the odd game for Cookham Dean during my service, but always difficult being at camp stationed in the West Country, Blandford & Warminster.
After demob. I married, started a family and at 23yrs. having spent 8yrs. with minor income, meant I needed to obtain a better income. However, I continued playing until we left for Australia in September 1962. I continued to play football for the Caledonian F.C. in Perth, West OZ, which would have been one of the most attractive venues anywhere on the river's edge below Perth City. I have always
Re. the attachment, from left to right starting at the back, I've done my best! George Barker(Sec.)-- George Wylie?(outside left)--?-- ?-- Roy Faulkner(Left-half)--?(Left back)-- Mr Baker(Chief Patron) owner "The Kings Arms"--Mr Winterbottom--Front Row:- Robin Tuck(inside right)--?(centre forward)--!!!--Arthur ? (Capt. centre half)--Peter Garratt(right half)-- Peter Finlan(right wing)--?(right back) positions with some poetic licence. I do hope someone can fill in the missing names. The last I heard of Roy Faulkner was that he was living in Twyford. Peter Finlan, I was in touch with last year was on email, living at Woburn/Loudwater. Looking again at this photo. after so many years and lookng at most of the faces, one would have thought that we had just won relegation ! instead of promotion.
In closing, yes, I hope to be in England next year, I have a daughter & family living there in Hants. It would be most agreeable to me to take up your offer of a match attendance, thank you. I was fortunate in winning the "Fairest & Best" club award for the 1956-57 season, but regret being unable to be at the presentation night, due to military service.
I trust I havn't been too long winded, but at my age it is nice to relive and share the past.

With regards,

Ted Lewendon
(Attached was 1954-55 Team Pic)

Hello Ted,
Too long winded???? You tell us as much as you can as often as you can. This is the history of OUR club and I never bore of reading or listening to peoples memories. It has been a pleasure reading you account below and would love to hear anymore info you may have about those years as you recall them.
We would be delighted to see you if you can make it, give us plenty of warning if you are as we have heard from a few other players who may or may not have been in your era, we could arrange a re-union if enough people hear about it.

Keep reading the website and stay in touch

Ted/15th Oct
I must say I had a great therapeutic laugh at the jokes of the week, keep up the good work; look forward to seeing you sometime. Wishing you all, continuing success for the season.

**
Some of the photos mailed in can be found on the Photo Gallery,
we also hope to raise enough funds during the season to have all the old pictures reframed ready to be unvailed at a possible reunion day
at the end of the season

Joke of the Week No 86
Date: 05/01/08
A list of actual announcements that London Tube train drivers have made to their passengers...

1) "Ladies and Gentlemen, I do apologize for the delay to your service. I know you're all dying to get home, unless, of course, you happen to be married to my ex-wife, in which case you'll want to cross over to the Westbound and go in the opposite direction."

2) "Your delay this evening is caused by the line controller suffering from E & B syndrome: not knowing his elbow from his backside. I'll let you know any further information as soon as I'm given any."

3) "Do you want the good news first or the bad news? The good news is that last Friday was my birthday and I hit the town and had a great time. The bad news is that there is a point's failure somewhere between Stratford and East Ham, which means we probably won't reach our destination."

4) "Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the delay, but there is a security alert at Victoria station and we are therefore stuck here for the foreseeable future, so let's take our minds off it and pass some time together. All together now.... 'Ten green bottles, hanging on a wall.....'."

5) "We are now travelling through Baker Street... As you can see, Baker Street is closed. It would have been nice if they had actually told me, so I could tell you earlier, but no, they don't think about things like that."

6) "Beggars are operating on this train. Please do NOT encourage these professional beggars. If you have any spare change, please give it to a registered charity. Failing that, give it to me."

7) During an extremely hot rush hour on the Central Line, the driver announced in a West Indian drawl: "Step right this way for the sauna, ladies and gentleman... unfortunately, towels are not provided."

8) "Let the passengers off the train FIRST!" (Pause.) "Oh go on then, stuff yourselves in like sardines, see if I care - I'm going home...."

9) "Please allow the doors to close. Try not to confuse this with 'Please hold the doors open.' The two are distinct and separate instructions."

10) "Please note that the beeping noise coming from the doors means that the doors are about to close. It does not mean throw yourself or your bags into the doors."

11) "We can't move off because some idiot has their hand stuck in the door."

12) "To the gentleman wearing the long grey coat trying to get on
the second carriage - what part of 'stand clear of the doors' don't you understand?"

13) "Please move all baggage away from the doors." (Pause..) "Please move ALL belongings away from the doors." (Pause...) "This is a personal message to the man in the brown suit wearing glasses at the rear of the train: Put the pie down, Four-eyes, and move your bl**dy golf clubs away from the door before I come down there and shove them up your a**e sideways!"

Football Forum (Updated)
Date: 23/11/06
Following a recent gathering between club Representatives and Reading League officials a meeting was arranged in which six Referees from the league came to the Clubhouse at Cookham to discuss the concerns and issues that players and club members have concerning Senior Division football and the way matches are officiated and the need for better communication between players and Refs. This had nothing to do with having problems with referees, this was to promote a better understanding between players and officials and dialogue can only help to improve relations
Our club like all others has a disiplinery points total that can lead to the club recieving large fines and much of those points can be arradicated if a different attitude can be adopted.
The evening was hailed as a success and enabled everyone present to get the Referees perspective and to air their views on many issues. This dialogue was mutually agreed to be to everyones benefit and can only be to the greater good of the game and lead to a better understanding between players and officials alike.

DEC Meeting
Reading Referees Association – Report provided on last RA meeting

League Meeting with Cookham Dean
Andy Awbery provided a report on a very successful meeting with Cookham Dean that he attended accompanied by several Senior Referees. It has been suggested that this could be repeated for other Clubs. Any club that would like a meeting should contact the General Secretary or Andy Awbery.

Seb Coe story
Date: 30/09/06
All the talk of veterans and old team photos reminded me of an old football story featuring the famous athlete Seb Coe from some years back, when Oxford United made a brief appearance in footballs top flight.
Arriving at Oxfords main stand with his ticket and a Chelsea scarf wrapped around his neck, he was stopped by a gateman who said, "sorry, Chelsea fans have got to go to the far side ",
"but I'm Seb Coe"
protested the World record holder,
"It won't take you long to get there then", replied the gateman.
