IMPORTANT NOTICE |
| Date: 17/03/08 |
Important message to all clubs, players and spectators
It is disappointing to advise that clubs within the Reading Football League continue to
abuse match officials to the extent that a number have since decided to leave refereeing on our League.
If this continues we will not be able to cover all matches with Official Referees
DO YOU WANT REGULAR REFEREES ?
REMEMBER ABUSE A REF - WE LOSE A REF

Reading League/Press Release |
| Date: 26/02/08 |
The events of recent weekends relating to abandoned fixtures, has prompted the question as to what is Reading Football League doing about these games and to prevent reoccurrences.
The question is “Who is the League?” Given that it is a competition in conjunction with the Referee’s Association that provides organised football for its members, who are the clubs, the question could be “What are club’s doing to reduce dissent amongst their players?”
Football is called the Beautiful Game, but how many players actual enjoy playing? All too often players want to contest and debate every decision referees make rather than concentrate on playing. Yes referees make mistakes, but so do players but referees do not criticise a player for doing so!
Similarly referees officiate as they enjoy the game. How would players feel if while working during the week, they were continually criticised and moaned at by their bosses? The likihood is that the worker would become nervous, fearful of making mistakes and in turn their working performance will deteriorate. The same applies to referees and the only way they will improve both in ability and confidence is if they are allowed to officiate in an enjoyable environment.
If clubs are unhappy with a referee’s performance, by use of the referee marking system and talking to the League, support can be given to a referee.
The last week saw the League’s Disciplinary Committee meet with a number of clubs, while the League’s General Secretary attended the monthly Reading Referees Association meeting to discuss matters with them.
The outcome of these meetings are that a number of clubs have been told that unless specific players’ disciplinary records improve, the players may find their registrations cancelled or not be allowed to register with the League in season 2008 – 09 while Senior Division clubs may find their invitation to play in the Senior Division removed due to poor conduct.
In addition the intended day of Referee Inaction on 1st March 2008 has been suspended.
One thing that is certain is that a greater need exists for League Officials, Clubs and Referees to work closer together
We all know there is a big problem with respect in local football generally. As a league we are keen to be seen to be taking the initiative and involving all parties in finding ways to improve the situation. We are obviously very concerned by the sentiments expressed by the referees and want to do all we can to help them. It is not their problem to sort out, it is all of ours. We have started a constructive dialogue and now want to see this momentum turned into positive outcomes for everyone. It's certainly no longer an option to bury heads in the sand and hope it will go away.
To this end, it is intended to create a working party to bring the various bodies together to identify a way forward so we all can enjoy the game again while also looking at how to arrest the decline referees giving up the game due to abuse they receive. Without referees greater onus will be placed on clubs to provide a match day official.
In the meantime, clubs are asked to refer to the Clubs Charter that appears in the League handbook, with particular reference to welcoming the referee when he arrives at the ground and to remind players / club officials / spectators of the need to exercise greater self control. A thank you to the referee after the game will also help him feel appreciated and hopefully want to continue officiating matches.
It is pleasing to report that Saturday 23rd February passed, in the main, without incident although it is understood that spectators at a couple of games were vociferous in their abuse of referees and had to asked to leave the vicinity of the match. It is to be hoped that the clubs concerned will be taking action to prevent a repeat of such actions.

Mailout received |

WELCOME to the Reading Evening Post’s ground-breaking Local Soccer forum.
Each weekend hundreds of players turn out for teams across the area.
And this is your chance to have your say on the local soccer scene.
Whether you play in the Combined Counties or Hellenic Leagues, or in Division 4 of the Reading Sunday League, this is your forum.
We will endeavour to bring you new stories, features, interviews and results.
And you can contribute yourself, either by writing on the forum or by letting us know of all the news from your club.
The Local Soccer forum will be split into three sections – senior non-league, Reading Football League and the Reading Sunday League.
To have your say, simply register on the site and you will be up and running.
The forum has been put together by the Evening Post’s internet wizard Tom Canning, who also writes a twice-weekly non-league column.
Stuart White, a news sub-editor and well-known in local soccer circles for his goalscoring exploits with such teams as Peppard, Reading Town, Reading Irish, Henley Town, Highmoor/Ibis and Berks County Sports, is eager to hear from you.
Stuart will be contributing features and interviews from around the town, as well as giving his unique insight into the local soccer scene.
Sports writers Adam Lee, who plays in goal for Bracknell Sunday League side Keltar Old Boys, and Ralph Webb will also have their say.
This is the first time an independent local soccer forum has been set up in the area, and it gives all clubs the chance to indulge in friendly banter with their rivals.
The forum will be monitored, so let’s keep it clean – any libellous or offensive material will be deleted and the writer banned from the site.
We are sure this will prove a sure-fire hit and look forward to hearing all your news and views.

Help with Injuries |
| Date: 20/01/08 |
We all know that one of the downsides to playing Football is picking up injuries. You cannot do yourself justice on the pitch if you have a knock or even worse you miss playing the game altogether if you have a bad one.
We have added some useful notes on the subject on one of the sites
new sections "team Documents".
The reason for doing it is I know how stubborn some players can be about seeking treatment, and it is to the benefit of the club that we help our players get over physical problems as soon as we can.
